In one of our previous articles we covered the subject of office desks, discussing issues of strength and durability. Now that is all well and good when buying office desks for the workplace, but what happens if you are buying desks for home instead? Is durability really such an issue? And what sort of size desk is best for use in a study at home?
Well when it comes to durability I'm afraid corner cannot be cut. Plenty of research by leading office furniture manufacturers has demonstrated that contrary to popular belief, office desks do not come under less strain at home than in the workplace. In face in many instances quite the opposite is true.
Desks in the home generally tend to be moved around more than when they are in an office; they have more junk sitting on them; and people tend to be less careful with their furniture at home than at work - boxed of paper get dropped on desk tops and so on.
So if you are looking for desks for your home office the suggestion is don't scrimp. You'll loose out long term.
As far as size goes, this can often be a tricky subject. Many people will order a big 2 meter jumbo desk and realise it takes up most of their study only when they get it in there! Tape measures and careful consideration are the order of the day here, and also be honest - how much desk space are you really going to require. Don't buy the biggest desk you find just for the sake of it. Make a considered and sensible decision and you're sure to end up happier for it.
Finally don't let price be the all-determining factor. This is your home after all. Don't be afraid to splash out a bit on something special, after all you're likely to be living with it for some time, and you still want your home to be a pleasant place to be in.
